Therapy for Eating Disorders and Other Food-Related Problems

  • Are you preoccupied with food?
  • Are you regularly concerned about your weight and how your body looks?
  • Do you use laxatives, make yourself sick, or exercise excessively?
  • Do you make excuses to not eat around other people?
  • Do you worry about losing control?
  • Have you had a significant change in your weight in a short period of time?
  • Do you wear clothes to hide your shape?
  • Do you stash food?
  • Do you binge, eating large amounts of food in a short period of time?
  • Do you find ways to eat secretly?

Body dissatisfaction and a negative body image are common, particularly in our image-oriented world. Approximately two-thirds of women express dissatisfaction with their bodies, and the number of men who are unhappy with their bodies is steadily increasing. Such dissatisfaction, along with other factors, including anxiety and feeling out of control, can often lead to unhealthy behaviors. These may include binge eating, abusing laxatives, intentionally vomiting, or exercising excessively. Such behaviors can create numerous physical problems, social and relationship impairment, and emotional distress.

What is therapy for eating disorders and food-related problems like?

Therapy that addresses eating disorders and food-related problems varies widely based on the specific issue that you have and the other strengths and limitations with which you present. Generally, however, therapy may help you gain an understanding of the roots of your eating behaviors and your relationship with food. Therapy may also assist you in identifying what triggers such behaviors for you. It can also help you understand what needs are getting met through such behaviors and help you develop new ways of meeting your needs in a healthier manner.
